  • In January 2017, for the eleventh consecutive month, dry natural gas production decreased year-to-year from the same month a year ago. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in January 2017 was 2,193 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 70.7 Bcf/day. This level was a 2.6 Bcf/day (3.6%) decrease from the January 2016 level of 73.4 Bcf/day.
  • The estimated natural gas consumption level in January 2017 was 2,885 Bcf, or 93.1 Bcf/day. This level was a decrease of 6.9%, or 6.9 Bcf/day, from the 3,098 Bcf consumed in January 2016. Dry gas consumption was the lowest for January since 2013.
  • Year-over-year total consumption of dry natural gas in January 2017 decreased in three of the four consuming sectors, with the exception being industrial deliveries, which increased year-to-year. Deliveries of natural gas by consuming sector in January 2017 were as follows:
    • Residential deliveries in January 2017 were 836 Bcf, or 27.0 Bcf/day, down 6.0% from 28.7 Bcf/day in January 2016. Residential deliveries were the lowest for January since 2012.
    • Commercial deliveries were 479 Bcf, or 15.5 Bcf/day, down 5.3% from 16.3 Bcf/day in January 2016. Commercial deliveries were the lowest for January since 2013.
    • Industrial deliveries were 727 Bcf, or 23.5 Bcf/day, up 1.1% from 23.2 Bcf/day in January 2016. Industrial deliveries were the highest for January since EIA began tracking them in 2001.
    • Electric power deliveries were 639 Bcf, or 20.6 Bcf/day, down 17.1% from 24.9 Bcf/day in January 2016. Electric power deliveries were the lowest for January since 2013.
