On September 25, 2019, EIA released its primary report on recent and historical energy statistics, the Monthly Energy Review (MER). Preliminary estimates indicate that for the first six months of 2019 

  • U.S. total primary energy consumption equaled 50 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu), a 1% decrease from the first six months of 2018. During that same period, natural gas consumption increased 3%; petroleum consumption remained virtually unchanged; nuclear electric power consumption and renewable energy consumption each decreased 1%, and coal consumption decreased 11%. 
  • U.S. total primary energy production equaled 50 quadrillion Btu, an 8% increase from the first six months of 2018. During that same period, crude oil production increased 15%; dry natural gas production increased 12%; nuclear electric power production and renewable energy production decreased 1%; and coal production decreased 3%. 
  • U.S. primary energy imports equaled 12 quadrillion Btu, a 9% decrease compared with the first six months of 2018.  
  • U.S. primary energy exports equaled 11 quadrillion Btu in 2019, a 14% increase from the first six months of 2018.
