The January Natural Gas Monthly, with data through November 2017, has been released.

  • In November 2017, for the sixth consecutive month, dry natural gas production increased year-to-year from the same month a year ago. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in November 2017 was 2,321 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 77.4  Bcf/day. This level was 5.3 Bcf/day (7.4%) higher than the November 2016 level of 72.1 Bcf/day. The average daily rate of dry natural gas production for November was the highest for any month since EIA began tracking monthly dry production in 1973.
  • The estimated natural gas consumption level in November 2017 was 2,352 Bcf, or 78.4 Bcf/day. This level was 8.7% (6.3 Bcf/day) higher than the 2,164 Bcf consumed in November 2016. Natural gas consumption for November was the second-highest level for the month since EIA began tracking monthly consumption using the current methodology in 2001.
  • Year-over-year total consumption of dry natural gas in November 2017 increased in each of the four consuming sectors. Deliveries of natural gas by consuming sector in November 2017 were as follows:
    • Residential deliveries in November 2017 were 467 Bcf, or 15.6 Bcf/day, up 22.9% from 12.7 Bcf/day in November 2016. Residential deliveries were the highest for November since 2014.
    • Commercial deliveries in November 2017 were 324 Bcf, or 10.8 Bcf/day, up 15.7% from 9.3 Bcf/day in November 2016. Commercial deliveries were the highest for November since 2014.
    • Industrial deliveries were 691 Bcf, or 23.0 Bcf/day, up 5.7% from 21.8 Bcf/day in November 2016. Industrial deliveries were the highest for November since EIA began using the current definitions for consuming sectors in 2001.
    • Electric power deliveries were 669 Bcf, or 22.3 Bcf/day, up 0.8% from 22.1 Bcf/day in November 2016. Electric power deliveries were the second-highest level for November since EIA began using the current definitions for consuming sectors in 2001.
  • Natural gas net imports (imports minus exports) were -45.8 Bcf, or -1.5 Bcf/day, in November 2017. Total imports were 8.1 Bcf/day, an increase of 4.8% from the 7.7 Bcf/day in November 2016. Total exports were 9.6 Bcf/day, an increase of 26.5% from the 7.6 Bcf/day in November 2016. The increase in exports continues to be driven by liquefied natural gas (LNG). LNG exports in November 2017 were more than double the level in November 2016. In November 2017, the United States exported 2.7 Bcf/day of LNG to 11 different countries.
