Highlights
Crude oil
- Monthly average crude oil prices continued to register increases in all sales categories in January. The average domestic crude oil first purchase price climbed $5.27 (9.2%), to $62.25 per barrel.
- The average free-on-board (f.o.b.) cost of imported crude oil rose $3.24 (6.0%) to $56.80 per barrel. The average landed cost of foreign crude oil increased $1.85 (3.3%), to $58.38 per barrel.
- The average refiner acquisition cost for domestic crude oil climbed $5.11 (8.4%), to $66.08 per barrel. The average cost of imported crude oil increased $1.83 (3.2%), to $59.39 per barrel. The composite refiner acquisition cost for crude oil rose $3.60 (6.0%), to $63.13 per barrel.
Petroleum products
Motor gasoline
- January monthly average prices for refiner sales of motor gasoline increased from December levels. The average retail price rose 7.4 cents to $2.108 per gallon, while the average wholesale price increased 12.9 cents to $1.849 per gallon.
- Refiner sales of finished motor gasoline declined in January. Total sales decreased 20.7 million gallons per day (6.3%) to an average of 305.6 million gallons per day. Retail sales fell 1.6 million gallons per day (6.6%), while wholesales declined 19.1 million gallons per day (6.3%). DTW sales accounted for 7.3% of wholesales, while rack and bulk sales made up 86.2% and 6.5%, respectively.
No. 2 distillate
- Monthly average prices for refiner sales of No. 2 distillates show mixed trends again in January. The average price for No. 2 diesel fuel sold to end users increased 10.7 cents to $2.144 per gallon, while the average wholesale price rose 12.5 cents to $2.043 per gallon. The average retail price for No. 2 fuel oil fell 5.7 cents to $2.206 per gallon, while the average wholesale price climbed 14.9 cents to $1.990 per gallon.
- Refiner sales of No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel fell 3.1 million gallons per day (2.0%) to 150.5 million gallons per day in January. Retail sales increased 200,000 gallons per day (1.8%), while wholesales declined 3.3 million gallons per day (2.3%).
Residual fuel oil
- Refiner monthly average prices for residual fuel oil sales increased in January. The wholesale price for low-sulfur residual fuel oil rose 9.5 cents to $1.349 per gallon. The price for high-sulfur residual fuel oil increased 2.9 cents to $1.476 per gallon at retail, while the wholesale price climbed 6.1 cents to $1.310 per gallon.
- Refiner residual fuel oil sales decreased to 12.6 million gallons per day in January. Retail sales fell 900,000 gallons per day (19.6%), while wholesales rose 800,000 gallons per day (9.9%).
Other products
- Refiner prices for the remaining surveyed products show varied trends in January. Kerosene-type jet fuel and No. 1 distillate prices rose at both the retail and wholesale levels, while prices for propane fell at retail, and remained flat at wholesale. Prices for aviation gasoline and kerosene increased in the wholesale category.
- Refiner sales of propane and No. 1 distillate increased at both the retail and wholesale levels during January, while kerosene-type jet sales fell in both categories. Sales of aviation gasoline decreased at the wholesale level, while kerosene sales increased in the same category.
