Highlights
Crude oil
- Monthly average crude oil prices continued to rise in all sales categories in January. The average domestic crude oil first purchase price rose $5.79 (13.2%) to $49.76 per barrel.
- The average free-on-board (f.o.b.) cost of imported crude oil increased $3.76 (9.0%) to $45.48 per barrel. The average landed cost of foreign crude oil rose $3.07 (6.9%) to $47.56 per barrel.
- The average refiner acquisition cost for domestic crude oil climbed $5.72 (12.3%) to $52.41 per barrel. The average cost of imported crude oil increased $4.27 (9.4%) to $49.57 per barrel. The composite refiner acquisition cost for crude oil rose $5.17 (11.2%) to $51.36 per barrel..
Petroleum products
Motor gasoline
- January monthly average prices for refiner sales of motor gasoline increased from December levels. The average retail price rose 15.8 cents to $1.986 per gallon, while the average wholesale price rose 18.1 cents to $1.575 per gallon.
- Refiner sales of finished motor gasoline fell in January. Total sales declined 11.0 million gallons per day (4.0%) to an average of 263.9 million gallons per day. Retail sales decreased 600,000 gallons per day (3.2%), while wholesales fell 10.4 million gallons per day (4.1%). DTW sales made up 6.4% of wholesales, while rack and bulk sales accounted for 91.3% and 2.4%, respectively.
No. 2 distillate
- Refiner monthly average prices for sales of No. 2 distillates rose again in January. The average price for No. 2 diesel fuel sold to end users increased 8.9 cents to $1.713 per gallon, while the average wholesale price rose 10.5 cents to $1.580 per gallon. The retail price for No. 2 fuel oil increased 9.9 cents to $2.103, while the wholesale price for No. 2 fuel oil rose 14.0 cents to $1.481 per gallon.
- Sales of No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel by refiners decreased in January. Total sales fell 8.1 million gallons per day (5.4%) to 142.7 million gallons per day.
Residual fuel oil
- Monthly average prices for refiner sales of residual fuel oil increased in January. The average retail price for residual fuel oil climbed 17.2 cents to $1.462 per gallon, while the average wholesale price rose 11.2 cents to $1.432 per gallon.
- Refiner residual fuel oil sales fell in January. Total sales declined 500,000 gallons per day (6.7%) to 7.0 million gallons per day. Retail sales fell 200,000 gallons per day (8.7), while wholesales decreased 300,000 gallons per day (5.8%).
Other products
- Refiner monthly average prices for sales of the remaining surveyed generally increased during January. Prices for propane, kerosene-type jet fuel, and aviation gasoline rose at both the retail and wholesale levels. No. 1 distillate prices fell at retail, but increased at wholesale. The price for kerosene also rose at the wholesale level.
- Refiner sales of these products show mixed trends in January. Propane and aviation gasoline sales rose at both retail and wholesale, while sales of kerosene-type jet fuel show the opposite trend. No. 1 distillate sales rose at the retail level, but declined at wholesale, while kerosene sales also decreased at the wholesale level.
