Highlights
Crude oil
- September monthly average crude oil prices mostly increased from August levels. The average domestic crude oil first purchase price rose 91 cents (1.5%), to $63.55 per barrel.
- The average free-on-board (f.o.b.) cost of imported crude oil increased $1.51 (2.5%) to $62.45 per barrel, while the average landed cost of foreign crude oil fell 19 cents (0.3%), to $63.42 per barrel.
- · The average refiner acquisition cost for domestic crude oil climbed $1.59 (2.3%), to $71.04 per barrel. The average cost of imported crude oil increased 94 cents (1.4%), to $66.42 per barrel. The composite refiner acquisition cost for crude oil rose $1.47 (2.2%), to $69.15 per barrel.
Petroleum products
Motor gasoline
- Prices for refiner sales of motor gasoline rose in September. The average retail price increased 0.4 cent to $2.428 per gallon, while the average wholesale price rose 1.8 cents to $2.136 per gallon.
- · Sales of finished motor gasoline by refiners fell in September. Total sales declined 10.0 million gallons per day (2.9%) to an average of 329.9 million gallons per day. Retail sales dropped 1.0 million gallons per day (3.9%), while wholesales fell 9.0 million gallons per day (2.9%). DTW sales accounted for 7.2% of wholesales, while rack and bulk sales made up 85.4% and 7.4%, respectively.
No. 2 distillate
- Monthly average prices for refiner sales of No. 2 distillates increased in September. The average price for No. 2 diesel fuel sold to end users rose 6.3 cents to $2.390 per gallon, while the average wholesale price climbed 7.9 cents to $2.282 per gallon. The average wholesale price for No. 2 fuel oil rose 10.0 cents to $2.214 per gallon.
- Refiner sales of No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel decreased 4.4 million gallons per day (2.6%) to 165.8 million gallons per day in September. Retail sales declined 400,000 gallons per day (3.1%), while wholesales fell 4.0 million gallons per day (2.5%).
Residual fuel oil
- Monthly average prices for refiner sales of residual fuel oil increased during September. The wholesale price for low-sulfur residual fuel oil rose 2.1 cents to $1.520 per gallon. The price for high-sulfur residual fuel oil increased 1.4 cents to $1.694 per gallon at retail, while the wholesale price rose 0.9 cent to $1.561 per gallon.
- Refiner residual fuel oil sales increased to 11.4 million gallons per day in September. Retail sales rose 400,000 per day (12.5%), while wholesales increased 200,000 gallons per day (2.6%).
Other products
- Refiner prices for the remaining surveyed products generally rose during September. Propane and kerosene-type jet fuel prices increased in both the retail and wholesale categories, while prices for kerosene fell at retail, but increased at wholesale. Aviation gasoline and No. 1 distillate prices increased at the wholesale level.
- Refiner sales of kerosene-type jet fuel and propane fell at both the retail and wholesale levels during September, while kerosene sales show the opposite trend. Aviation gasoline sales fell at wholesale, while No. 1 distillate sales rose in the same category.
