Summary data on energy production, consumption, stocks, trade, prices, and emissions

The August 2017 Monthly Energy Review (MER), EIA's primary report of recent and historical energy statistics, was released on August 28, 2017.  Preliminary estimates indicate that for May 2017:

  • Primary energy consumption equaled 7.8 quadrillion Btu, a 3% increase from May 2016.  The electric power sector accounted for 38% of the total, the transportation sector for 31%, the industrial sector for 23%, the residential sector for 4%, and the commercial sector for 3%.
  • Electric power sector primary energy consumption equaled 3.0 quadrillion Btu, a 2% increase from May 2016.
  • Transportation sector primary energy consumption equaled 2.4 quadrillion Btu, a 3% increase from May 2016.
  • Industrial sector primary energy consumption equaled 1.8 quadrillion Btu, a 4% increase from May 2016.
  • Residential sector primary energy consumption equaled 0.3 quadrillion Btu, a 1% increase from May 2016.
  • Commercial sector primary energy consumption equaled 0.3 quadrillion Btu, a 1% increase from May 2016.

The MER provides monthly and annual data on total energy production, consumption, stocks, trade, prices, and emissions; overviews of U.S. petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and carbon dioxide emissions, as well as international petroleum; and data unit conversions.
