The June 2019 Monthly Energy Review (MER), EIA's primary report on recent and historical energy statistics, was released on June 25, 2019. Preliminary estimates for commercial sector energy consumption indicate that for March 2019

• U.S. commercial sector total energy consumption equaled 1.6 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu), a 1% decrease from March 2018. The commercial sector accounted for 18% of total U.S. energy consumption.
  

• Electricity retail sales and associated electrical system energy losses accounted for 66% of commercial sector total energy consumption.

• Natural gas accounted for 27% of commercial sector total energy consumption, petroleum accounted for 5%, and renewable energy accounted for 2%.
