Summary data on energy production, consumption, stocks, trade, prices, and emissions

The March 2018 Monthly Energy Review (MER), EIA's primary report of recent and historical energy statistics, was released on March 27, 2018.  Preliminary estimates indicate that for 2017:

  • U.S. primary energy consumption totaled 98 quadrillion Btu, which was virtually unchanged from 2016.  Renewable energy consumption increased 7%, petroleum consumption increased 1%, nuclear electric power consumption was virtually unchanged, natural gas consumption decreased 1%, and coal consumption decreased 2%.
  • U.S. primary energy production totaled 87 quadrillion Btu, a 4% increase compared with 2016.  Renewable energy production increased 8%, coal production increased 6%, crude oil production increased 5%, and natural gas production increased 1%.  Nuclear electric power production was virtually unchanged.
  • U.S. primary energy imports totaled 25 quadrillion Btu, which was virtually unchanged from 2016.  U.S. primary energy exports increased from 14 quadrillion Btu in 2016 to 18 quadrillion Btu in 2017, a 27% increase.

The MER provides monthly and annual data on total energy production, consumption, stocks, trade, prices, and emissions; overviews of U.S. petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and carbon dioxide emissions, as well as international petroleum; and data unit conversions.
