The March Natural Gas Monthly, with data through January 2021, has been released.

  • In January 2021, for the ninth consecutive month, dry natural gas production decreased year over year for the month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in January 2021 was 2,867 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 92.5 Bcf/d. This level was 2.6 Bcf/d (-2.7%) lower than the January 2020 level of 95.1 Bcf/d. Despite this year-over-year decrease, the average daily rate of dry production was the second highest for the month since the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) began tracking monthly dry production in 1973. Gross withdrawals and marketed production of natural gas in January 2021 were as follows:
  • Gross withdrawals: 3,505 Bcf for the month, or 113.1 Bcf/d
  • Down 2.4% compared with 115.8 Bcf/d in January 2020.
  • Marketed production: 3,099 Bcf for the month, or 100.0 Bcf/d
  • Down 2.6% compared with 102.6 Bcf/d in January 2020. California (0.4 Bcf/d) saw its lowest marketed production for any month since EIA began tracking its monthly marketed production in 1989. Although production was down year over year nationwide, Pennsylvania (21.2 Bcf/d) again saw its highest daily rate of marketed production for any month in January 2021 since EIA began tracking its monthly marketed production in 1991.
  • Estimated natural gas consumption in January 2021 was 3,288 Bcf, or 106.1 Bcf/d. This level was 0.3 Bcf/d (0.2%) lower than the 106.3 Bcf/d consumed in January 2020. Natural gas consumption was the lowest for the month since 2017.
  • The year-over-year average daily rate of consumption of dry natural gas in January 2021 increased in three of the four consuming sectors. Deliveries of natural gas by consuming sector in January 2021 were as follows:
  • Residential deliveries: 876 Bcf for the month, or 28.3 Bcf/d
  • Up 6.7% compared with 26.5 Bcf/d in January 2020.
  • Commercial deliveries: 491 Bcf for the month, or 15.8 Bcf/d
  • Up 0.8% compared with 15.7 Bcf/d in January 2020.
  • Industrial deliveries: 792 Bcf for the month, or 25.6 Bcf/d
  • Up 0.1% compared with 25.5 Bcf/d in January 2020. Industrial deliveries were the second highest for the month since EIA began using the current definitions for consuming sectors in 2001.
  • Electric power deliveries: 866 Bcf for the month, or 27.9 Bcf/d
  • Down 7.0% compared with 30.0 Bcf/d in January 2020. Despite this decrease, electric power deliveries were the second highest for the month since EIA began using the current definitions for consuming sectors in 2001.
  • Net natural gas imports (imports minus exports) were -338 Bcf, or -10.9 Bcf/d, in January 2021, making the United States a net exporter. Natural gas imports and exports in January 2021 were as follows:
  • Total imports: 284 Bcf for the month, or 2 Bcf/d
  • Up 8.4% compared with 8.5 Bcf/d in January 2020.
  • Total exports: 622 Bcf for the month, or 20.1 Bcf/d

Up 22.0% compared with 16.5 Bcf/d in January 2020. The average daily rate of natural gas exports was the highest for any month since EIA began tracking monthly exports in 1973. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports in January 2021 were also the highest for any month on record, up 22.0% compared with January 2020. In January 2021, the United States exported 9.8 Bcf/d of LNG to 24 countries.
