The May Natural Gas Monthly, with data through March 2017, has been released.

  • In March 2017, for the thirteenth consecutive month, dry natural gas production decreased year-to-year from the same month a year ago. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in March 2017 was 2,219 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 71.6 Bcf/day. This level was a 1.8 Bcf/day (2.4%) decrease from the March 2016 level of 73.4 Bcf/day.

  • The estimated natural gas consumption level in March 2017 was 2,505 Bcf, or 80.8 Bcf/day. This level was an increase of 6.2%, or 4.7 Bcf/day, from the 2,359 Bcf consumed in March 2016.

  • Year-over-year total consumption of dry natural gas in March 2017 increased in three of the four consuming sectors, with the exception being electric power deliveries, which decreased year-over-year.  Deliveries of natural gas by consuming sector in March 2017 were as follows:

    • Commercial deliveries were 370 Bcf, or 11.9 Bcf/day, up 23.3% from 9.7 Bcf/day in March 2016.

    • Industrial deliveries were 689 Bcf, or 22.2 Bcf/day, up 4.1% from 21.4 Bcf/day in March 2016. Industrial deliveries were the highest for March since EIA began tracking them in 2001.

    • Electric power deliveries were 667 Bcf, or 21.5 Bcf/day, down 10.2% from 24.0 Bcf/day in March 2016. Electric power deliveries were the lowest for March since 2014.
