Highlights
Crude oil
- Monthly average crude oil prices rose in all sales categories in November. The average domestic crude oil first purchase price increased $6.07 (12.4%), to $55.20 per barrel.
- The average free-on-board (f.o.b.) cost of imported crude oil rose $5.02 (10.6%) to $52.24 per barrel. The average landed cost of foreign crude oil climbed $5.04 (10.0%), to $55.47 per barrel.
- The average refiner acquisition cost for domestic crude oil increased $4.99 (9.3%), to $58.68 per barrel. The average cost of imported crude oil rose $4.41 (8.5%), to $56.21 per barrel. The composite refiner acquisition cost for crude oil rose $4.72 (8.9%), to $57.58 per barrel.
Petroleum products
Motor gasoline
- November monthly average prices for refiner sales of motor gasoline increased from October levels. The average retail price rose 8.0 cents to $2.122 per gallon, while the average wholesale price increased 7.6 cents to $1.806 per gallon.
- Refiner sales of finished motor gasoline declined during November. Total sales decreased 1.3 million gallons per day (0.4%) to an average of 329.5 million gallons per day. Retail sales fell 600,000 gallons per day (2.4%), while wholesales dropped 700,000 gallons per day (0.2%). DTW sales accounted for 7.2% of wholesales, while rack and bulk sales made up 86.0% and 6.8%, respectively.
No. 2 distillate
- Monthly average prices for refiner sales of No. 2 distillates rose in November. The average price for No. 2 diesel fuel sold to end users increased 6.5 cents to $2.047 per gallon, while the average wholesale price climbed 8.4 cents to $1.936 per gallon. The average retail price for No. 2 fuel oil increased 8.6 cents to $2.134 per gallon, while the average wholesale price also rose 8.6 cents to $1.781 per gallon.
- November sales of No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel by refiners fell 4.5 million gallons per day (2.7%) to 162.1 million gallons per day. Retail sales increased 700,000 gallons per day (5.8%), while wholesales dropped 5.2 million gallons per day (3.4%).
Residual fuel oil
- Refiner monthly average prices for sales of residual fuel oil increased in November. The wholesale price for low-sulfur residual fuel oil climbed 14.9 cents to $1.302 per gallon. The price for high-sulfur residual fuel oil rose 13.5 cents to $1.384 per gallon at retail, while the wholesale price increased 9.9 cents to $1.277 per gallon.
- Overall, refiner residual fuel oil sales fell in November. Retail sales rose 800,000 gallons per day (22.9%), while wholesales dropped 1.2 million gallons per day (14.3%).
Other products
- Refiner prices for the remaining surveyed products rose in November. Propane, kerosene-type jet fuel, and No. 1 distillate prices increased at both the retail and wholesale levels. Prices for aviation gasoline and kerosene also rose at wholesale.
- Refiner sales of propane and No. 1 distillate increased at both the retail and wholesale levels, while kerosene-type jet fuel sales rose at retail but fell at wholesale. Aviation gasoline sales decreased at the wholesale level, while kerosene sales rose in the same category.
