Highlights

Crude oil

      • Monthly average crude oil prices continued to decline in October. The average domestic crude oil first purchase price fell 43 cents (1.2%) to $36.46 per barrel.
      • The average free-on-board (f.o.b.) cost of imported crude oil decreased $1.21 (3.4%) to $34.10 per barrel. The average landed cost of foreign crude oil fell $1.09 (2.9%) to $36.53 per barrel.
      • The average refiner acquisition cost for domestic crude oil dropped 36 cents (0.9%) to $40.06 per barrel. The average cost of imported crude oil fell 96 cents (2.5%) to $37.80 per barrel. The composite refiner acquisition cost for crude oil decreased 62 cents (1.6%) to $39.21 per barrel.

Petroleum products

Motor gasoline
      • Refiner monthly average prices for motor gasoline also continued to fall in October. The average retail price fell 2.7 cents to $1.777 per gallon, while the average wholesale price declined 4.2 cents to $1.312 per gallon.
      • October sales of finished motor gasoline by refiners decreased from September levels. Total sales fell 900,000 gallons per day (0.3%) to an average of 292.9 million gallons per day. Retail sales declined 200,000 gallons per day (1.0%), while wholesales decreased 1.1 million gallons per day (0.4%). DTW sales made up 6.7% of wholesales, while rack and bulk sales accounted for 90.6% and 2.8%, respectively.
No. 2 distillate
      • Prices for refiner No. 2 distillates sales show mixed trends in October. The average price for No. 2 diesel fuel sold to end users rose 1.4 cents to $1.400 per gallon, while the average wholesale price increased 2.0 cents to $1.215 cents per gallon. The average retail price for No. 2 fuel oil sales fell 5.1 cents to $1.360 per gallon, while the average wholesale price declined 0.2 cent to $1.089 per gallon.
      • Refiner sales of No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel dropped to 158.8 million gallons per day in October. Retail sales fell 100,000 gallons per day (1.1%), while wholesales declined 1.8 million gallons per day (1.2%).
Residual fuel oil
      • Refiner prices for sales of residual fuel oil fell in October. The average retail price for residual fuel oil decreased 4.9 cents to $1.151 per gallon, while the average wholesale price fell 2.5 cents to $1.041 per gallon.
      • Refiner residual fuel oil sales increased 800,000 gallons per day (10.1%) to 8.7 million gallons per day in October. Retail sales climbed 1.0 million gallons per day (52.6%), while wholesales slipped 200,000 gallons per day (3.3%).
Other products
    • Refiner monthly average prices for sales of the remaining surveyed products were mostly on the rise in October. Propane, kerosene-type jet fuel, and No. 1 distillate prices increased in both the retail and wholesale categories, while aviation gasoline prices show the opposite trend. The price for kerosene rose at the wholesale.
    • Refiner sales of these products show mixed trends in October. Sales of propane declined at retail but rose at wholesale, while kerosene-type jet fuel sales show the opposite trend. Aviation gasoline and No. 1 distillate sales increased at both the retail and wholesale levels, while kerosene sales decreased at the wholesale level.
