Highlights
Crude oil
- Monthly average crude oil prices continued to rise in April. The average domestic crude oil first purchase price rose $5.54 (9.6%) to $63.01 per barrel.
- The average free-on-board (f.o.b.) cost of imported crude oil increased $4.24 (7.4%) to $61.19 per barrel. The average landed cost of foreign crude oil rose $4.17 (7.1%) to $63.05 per barrel.
- The average refiner acquisition cost for domestic crude oil climbed $5.27 (8.5%) to $67.24 per barrel. The average cost of imported crude oil increased $4.28 (7.0%) to $65.42 per barrel. The composite refiner acquisition cost for crude oil rose $4.88 (7.9%) to $66.52 per barrel.
Petroleum products
Motor gasoline
- April monthly average prices for refiner sales of motor gasoline show increases in all sales categories. The average retail price climbed 35.0 cents to $2.487 per gallon, while the average wholesale price rose 25.7 cents to $2.138 per gallon.
- Sales of finished motor gasoline by refiners increased during April. Total sales rose 6.7 million gallons per day (2.1%) to an average of 329.1 million gallons per day. Retail sales declined 200,000 gallons per day (0.8%), while wholesales increased 6.9 million gallons per day (2.3%). DTW sales accounted for 7.2% of wholesales, while rack and bulk sales explained 87.4% and 5.4%, respectively.
No. 2 distillate
- Monthly average prices for refiner sales of No. 2 distillates moved higher during April. The average price for No. 2 diesel fuel sold to end users rose 10.2 cents to $2.260 per gallon, while the average wholesale price increased 8.1 cents to $2.101 per gallon. The average retail price for No. 2 fuel oil rose 8.5 cents to $2.461 per gallon, while the average wholesale price increased 4.0 cents to $1.998 per gallon.
- Monthly sales of No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel by refiners rose 5.5 million gallons per day (3.3%) to 170.6 million gallons per day in April. While retail sales were flat, sales at the wholesale level increased 5.5 million gallons per day (3.6%).
Residual fuel oil
- April monthly average prices for refiner sales of residual fuel oil show mixed trends. The retail price for residual fuel oil increased 4.6 cents to $1.685 per gallon, while the wholesale price dropped 0.4 cent to $1.577 per gallon.
- Refiner residual fuel oil sales increased to 11.7 million gallons per day in April. Retail sales rose 200,000 per day (9.1%), while wholesales rose 2.4 million gallons per day (34.8%).
Other products
- The direction of refiner prices for the remaining surveyed products were mixed in April. Prices for kerosene-type jet fuel rose at both the retail and wholesale levels, while propane prices declined in both sales categories. Prices for No. 1 distillate sales rose at retail but fell at wholesale. The price for aviation gasoline increased at the wholesale level, while the price for kerosene declined in the same sales category.
- Refiner sales of propane were flat at retail and declined at wholesale during April. Kerosene-type jet fuel sales rose at retail but declined at the wholesale level, while sales of No.1 distillate declined in both sales categories. Sales of aviation gasoline increased at wholesale, while kerosene sales declined in the same category.
