Highlights

Crude oil

  • March monthly average crude oil prices rose in all sales category. The average domestic crude oil first purchase price increased $4.96 (9.4%) to $57.47 per barrel.
  • The average free-on-board (f.o.b.) cost of imported crude oil increased $2.81 (5.2%) to $56.48 per barrel. The average landed cost of foreign crude oil rose $2.84 (5.1%) to $58.24 per barrel.
  • · The average refiner acquisition cost for domestic crude oil rose $3.52 (6.1%) to $61.41 per barrel. The average cost of imported crude oil increased $4.70 (8.3%) to $61.20 per barrel. The composite refiner acquisition cost for crude oil climbed $3.98 (6.9%) to $61.33 per barrel.

Petroleum products

Motor gasoline
  • Monthly average prices for refiner sales of motor gasoline show across-the-board increases. The average retail price rose 18.8 cents to $2.137 per gallon, while the average wholesale price climbed 25.7 cents to $1.881 per gallon.
  • Sales of finished motor gasoline by refiners rose in March. Total sales increased 6.8 million gallons per day (2.2%) to an average of 322.0 million gallons per day. Retail sales rose 700,000 gallons per day (3.0%), while wholesales increased 6.1 million gallons per day (2.1%). DTW sales accounted for 7.3% of wholesales, while rack and bulk sales explained 87.2% and 5.6%, respectively.
No. 2 distillate
  • Monthly average prices for refiner sales of No. 2 distillates increased in March. The average price for No. 2 diesel fuel sold to end users climbed 7.8 cents to $2.158 per gallon, while the average wholesale price rose 7.0 cents to $2.020 per gallon. The average retail price for No. 2 fuel oil rose 0.9 cent to $2.376 per gallon, while the average wholesale price increased 5.1 cents to $1.958 per gallon.
  • Monthly sales of No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel by refiners rose 6.0 million gallons per day (3.8%) to 165.2 million gallons per day. Retail sales fell 500,000 gallons per day (4.1%), while wholesales increased 6.5 million gallons per day (4.4%).
Residual fuel oil
  • March monthly average prices for refiner sales of residual fuel oil rose from February levels. The retail price for residual fuel oil increased 5.5 cents to $1.623 per gallon, while the wholesale price rose 6.4 cents to $1.572 per gallon.
  • Refiner residual fuel oil sales declined to 8.9 million gallons per day in March. Retail sales fell 100,000 per day (4.3%), while wholesales declined 900,000 gallons per day (11.8%).
Other products
  • Refiner prices for the remaining surveyed products show mixed trends in March. Prices for kerosene-type jet fuel and No. 1 distillate rose at both the retail and wholesale levels, while propane prices show the opposite trend. The price for aviation gasoline increased at the wholesale level, while the price for kerosene fell in the same category.
  • Refiner sales of propane and No.1 distillate declined at retail and wholesale, while kerosene-type jet fuel sales increased at both levels. Sales of aviation gasoline rose at wholesale, while kerosene sales decreased in the same category.
