Highlights

Crude oil

  • Monthly average crude oil prices decreased in June. The average domestic crude oil first purchase price dropped $5.39 (9.0%) to $54.29 per barrel.
  • The average free-on-board (f.o.b.) cost of imported crude oil fell $7.22 (11.9%) to $53.31 per barrel. The average landed cost of foreign crude oil declined $7.05 (11.1%) to $56.65 per barrel.
  • The average refiner acquisition cost for domestic crude oil decreased $5.36 (8.2%) to $59.81 per barrel. The average cost of imported crude oil fell $6.87 (10.6%) to $58.16 per barrel. The composite refiner acquisition cost for crude oil declined $5.95 (9.1%) to $59.16 per barrel.

Petroleum products

Motor gasoline
  • Prices for refiner sales of motor gasoline declined in June. The average retail price dropped 15.4 cents to $2.366 per gallon, while the average wholesale price fell 20.1 cents to $1.909 per gallon.
  • Sales of finished motor gasoline by refiners decreased in June. Total sales dropped 800,000 gallons per day (0.2%) to an average of 333.1 million gallons per day. Retail sales increased 200,000 gallons per day (0.8%), while wholesales fell 1.0 million gallons per day (0.3%). DTW sales accounted for 7.1% of wholesales, while rack and bulk sales explained 88.6% and 4.2%, respectively.
No. 2 distillate
  • No. 2 distillates prices for sales made by refiners fell in June. The average price for No. 2 diesel fuel sold to end users dropped 19.4 cents to $2.078 per gallon, while the average wholesale price fell 23.2 cents to $1.874 per gallon. The average retail price for No. 2 fuel oil decreased 23.3 cents to $2.156 per gallon, while the average wholesale price dropped 16.5 cents to $1.824 per gallon.
  • Monthly sales of No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel by refiners rose 7.3 million gallons per day (4.3%) to 178.5 million gallons per day in June. Retail sales fell 200,000 gallons per day (1.7%), while wholesales increased 7.5 million gallons per day (4.7%).
Residual fuel oil
  • Monthly average prices for refiner sales of residual fuel oil decreased in June. The retail price for residual fuel oil dropped 3.4 cents to $1.601 per gallon, while the wholesale price fell 13.3 cents to $1.372 per gallon.
  • Refiner residual fuel oil sales rose to 11.0 million gallons per day in June. Retail sales increased 1.3 million gallons per day (65.0%), while wholesales rose 300,000 gallons per day (4.1%).
Other products
  • Refiner prices for the remaining surveyed products fell during June. Prices for propane and kerosene-type jet fuel dropped at both the retail and wholesale levels. Aviation gasoline, kerosene, and No. 1 distillate prices declined at the wholesale level.
  • Refiner sales of propane and kerosene-type jet fuel increased at both retail and wholesale in June, while sales of No. 1 distillate fell at both levels. Sales of aviation gasoline declined at the wholesale level, while kerosene sales increased in the same category.
