U.S. average regular gasoline and diesel prices increase

The U.S. average regular gasoline retail price increased nearly 7 cents to $2.22 per gallon on December 21, almost 31 cents lower than the same time last year. The Midwest price increased more than 11 cents to $2.12 per gallon, the Gulf Coast price increased 9 cents to $1.93 per gallon, the East Coast price increased more than 5 cents to $2.19 per gallon, the Rocky Mountain price increased more than 2 cents to $2.19 per gallon, and the West Coast price increased nearly 1 cent to $2.78 per gallon.

The U.S. average diesel fuel price increased 6 cents to $2.62 per gallon on December 21, 42 cents lower than a year ago. The Midwest price increased more than 8 cents to $2.56 per gallon, the Gulf Coast price increased more than 7 cents to $2.38 per gallon, the East Coast increased nearly 5 cents to $2.65 per gallon, the Rocky Mountain price increased nearly 3 cents to $2.38 per gallon, and the West Coast price increased more than 2 cents to $3.10 per gallon.

Propane/propylene inventories decline

U.S. propane/propylene stocks decreased by 2.3 million barrels last week to 81.6 million barrels as of December 18, 2020, 3.1 million barrels (3.9%) greater than the five-year (2015-19) average inventory levels for this same time of year. Gulf Coast inventories decreased by 1.5 million barrels, Midwest inventories decreased by 1.0 million barrels, and Rocky Mountain/West Coast inventories decreased slightly, remaining virtually unchanged. East Coast inventories increased by 0.2 million barrels.

Residential heating fuel prices increase

As of December 21, 2020, residential heating oil prices averaged more than $2.42 per gallon, almost 9 cents per gallon above last week’s price but more than 63 cents per gallon lower than last year’s price at this time. Wholesale heating oil prices averaged more than $1.62 per gallon, more than 8 cents per gallon above last week’s price but nearly 51 cents per gallon lower than last year.

Residential propane prices averaged $1.94 per gallon, 4 cents per gallon above last week’s price but more than 8 cents per gallon below last year’s price. Wholesale propane prices averaged $0.84 per gallon, more than 12 cents per gallon higher than last week’s price and more than 7 cents per gallon above last year’s price.
