The April 2019 Monthly Energy Review (MER), EIA's primary report of recent and historical energy statistics, was released on April 25, 2019. Preliminary estimates for January 2019 indicate that

• Primary energy consumption equaled 9.5 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu), a 1% decrease from January 2018. The electric power sector accounted for 34% of the total, the transportation sector for 24%, the industrial sector for 22%, the residential sector for 12%, and the commercial sector for 7%.
• Electric power sector primary energy consumption equaled 3.3 quadrillion Btu, a 5% decrease from January 2018.
• Transportation sector primary energy consumption equaled 2.3 quadrillion Btu, a 1% increase from January 2018.
  
• Industrial sector primary energy consumption equaled 2.1 quadrillion Btu, a 3% increase from January 2018.
• Residential sector primary energy consumption in the United States equaled 1.2 quadrillion Btu, a 3% decrease from January 2018.
• Commercial sector primary energy consumption equaled 0.7 quadrillion Btu, a less than 1% decrease from January 2018.
