The August 2019 Monthly Energy Review (MER), EIA's primary report on recent and historical energy statistics, was released on August 27, 2019. Preliminary estimates for May 2019 indicate that

• The transportation sector accounted for 30% of U.S. total energy consumption.  Total energy consumption in this sector equaled 2.4 quadrillion British thermal units, a 2% decrease from May 2018.

• Petroleum accounted for 92% of total energy consumption in the transportation sector.  Biomass accounted for 5% of energy consumption in this sector, while natural gas accounted for 3%.  Electricity retail sales and electrical system energy losses accounted for less than 1%.
