On August 26, 2020, EIA released its primary report on recent and historical energy statistics, the Monthly Energy Review (MER). Preliminary estimates for May 2020 indicate that

• Primary energy consumption totaled 6.87 quadrillion British thermal units (quads), a 5% increase from the previous month. The electric power sector accounted for 40% of total energy consumption, the transportation sector for 26%, the industrial sector for 25%, the residential sector for 6%, and the commercial sector for 4%.

• Electric power sector primary energy consumption increased from 2.45 quads in April to 2.72 quads in May, an 11% rise.

• Transportation sector primary energy consumption increased from 1.57 quads in April to 1.80 quads in May, a 15% rise.

• Industrial sector primary energy consumption increased from 1.65 quads in April to 1.71 quads in May, a 3% rise.

• Residential sector primary energy consumption fell from 0.54 quads in April to 0.39 quads in May, a 28% decrease.

• Commercial sector primary energy consumption fell from 0.33 quads in April to 0.26 quads in May, a 22% decrease.
