On July 28, 2020, EIA released its primary report on recent and historical energy statistics, the Monthly Energy Review (MER). Preliminary estimates indicate that

• Primary energy consumption fell from 7.6 quadrillion British thermal units (quads) in April 2019 to 6.5 quads in April 2020, a 14% decrease. The electric power sector accounted for 37% of total consumption, the industrial sector for 25%, the transportation sector for 24%, the residential sector for 8%, and the commercial sector for 5%.

• Electric power sector primary energy consumption decreased from 2.7 quads in April 2019 to 2.4 quads in April 2020, an 8% decrease.

• Industrial sector primary energy consumption fell from 1.8 quads in April 2019 to 1.6 quads in April 2020, a 10% decrease.

• Transportation sector primary energy consumption decreased from 2.3 quads in April 2019 to 1.6 quads in April 2020, a 32% decrease.
  

• Residential sector primary energy consumption equaled 0.5 quads in April 2020, a 13% increase.

• Commercial sector primary energy consumption equaled 0.3 quads in April 2020, a 5% decrease from April 2019.
