Highlights
Crude oil
- Monthly average crude oil prices rose in all sales categories in December. The average domestic crude oil first purchase price increased $5.73 (15.0%) to $43.96 per barrel.
- The average free-on-board (f.o.b.) cost of imported crude oil climbed $5.17 (14.3%) to $41.26 per barrel. The average landed cost of foreign crude oil rose $4.91 (12.7%) to $43.68 per barrel.
- The average refiner acquisition cost for domestic crude oil increased $5.10 (12.3%) to $46.66 per barrel. The average cost of imported crude oil climbed $6.07 (15.5%) to $45.19 per barrel. The composite refiner acquisition cost for crude oil rose $5.46 (13.4%) to $46.14 per barrel.
Petroleum products
Motor gasoline
- Monthly average prices for refiner motor gasoline sales increased in December. The average retail price increased 9.2 cents to $1.828 per gallon, while the average wholesale price rose 10.7 cents to $1.394 per gallon.
- Refiner sales of finished motor gasoline decreased in December. Total sales fell 3.4 million gallons per day (1.2%) to an average of 275.6 million gallons per day. Retail sales dropped 300,000 gallons per day (1.6%), while wholesales decreased 3.1 million gallons per day (1.2%). DTW sales made up 6.3% of wholesales, while rack and bulk sales accounted for 91.0% and 2.7%, respectively.
No. 2 distillate
- Prices for refiner sales of No. 2 distillates continued to rise in December. The average price for No. 2 diesel fuel sold to end users rose 14.3 cents to $1.625 per gallon, while the average wholesale price increased 16.0 cents to $1.475 per gallon. The wholesale price for No. 2 fuel rose 18.5 cents to $1.341 per gallon.
- Sales of No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel by refiners declined in December. Total sales fell 1.3 million gallons per day (0.9%) to 150.7 million gallons per day. Retail sales declined 300,000 gallons per day (3.3%), while wholesales decreased 1.0 million gallons per day (0.7%).
Residual fuel oil
- December prices for refiner sales of residual fuel rose from November levels. The average retail price for residual fuel oil increased 14.4 cents to $1.289 per gallon, while the average wholesale price rose 17.8 cents to $1.323 per gallon.
- Refiner residual fuel oil sales dropped 300,000 gallons per day (4.1%) to 7.1 million gallons per day in December. Retail sales were flat, while wholesales accounted for the overall decline of 300,000 gallons per day (5.6%).
Other products
- Monthly average prices for refiner sales of the remaining surveyed were rose in December. Propane, kerosene-type jet fuel, aviation gasoline, and No. 1 distillate prices increased at both retail and wholesale. The price for kerosene also rose at the wholesale level.
- Refiner sales of these products show mixed trends in December. Propane and No. 1 distillate fell at retail, but increased at wholesale, while aviation gasoline sales show the opposite trend. Kerosene-type jet fuel sales rose in both sales categories, while kerosene sales increased at the wholesale level.
