Summary data on energy production, consumption, stocks, trade, prices, and emissions

The April 2017 Monthly Energy Review (MER), EIA's primary report of recent and historical energy statistics, was released on April 25, 2017.  Preliminary estimates indicate that for January 2017:

  • U.S. renewable energy consumption totaled 896 trillion Btu, which represented 10% of U.S. total primary energy consumption.
  • Biomass accounted for 44% of U.S. renewable energy consumption, hydroelectric power 29%, wind energy 21%, solar energy 4%, and geothermal energy 2%.
  • As a share of U.S. primary energy consumption, renewable energy consumption accounted for 16% in the electric power sector, 11% in the industrial sector, 5% in the transportation sector, 4% in the residential sector, and 3% in the commercial sector.

The MER provides monthly and annual data on total energy production, consumption, stocks, trade, prices, and emissions; overviews of U.S. petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and carbon dioxide emissions, as well as international petroleum; and data unit conversions.
