Summary data on energy production, consumption, stocks, trade, prices, and emissions
The June 2017 Monthly Energy Review (MER), EIA's primary report of recent and historical energy statistics, was released on June 28, 2017. Preliminary estimates indicate that for March 2017:
- U.S. primary energy consumption totaled 8.4 quadrillion Btu, a 6% increase from March 2016. Petroleum made up 37% of primary energy consumption, natural gas 31%, coal and renewable energy 12% each, and nuclear electric power 8%.
- Compared with March 2016, U.S. petroleum consumption increased 2%, natural gas consumption increased 6%, nuclear electric power consumption decreased 2%, and coal consumption increased 20%.
- Compared with March 2016, total U.S. renewable energy consumption increased 10%. Wind power consumption increased 16%, conventional hydroelectric power increased 12%, and biomass consumption increased 2%.
