Highlights
Crude oil
- Monthly average crude oil prices increased in all sales categories at the start of 2019. The January average domestic crude oil first purchase price rose 13 cents (0.3%), to $47.85 per barrel.
- The average free-on-board (f.o.b.) cost of imported crude oil climbed $11.41 (31.9%) to $47.23 per barrel, while the average landed cost of foreign crude oil rose $8.94 (23.1%), to $47.59 per barrel.
- The average refiner acquisition cost for domestic crude oil increased 48 cents (0.9%), to $53.73 per barrel. The average cost of imported crude oil rose $6.39 (14.9%), to $49.19 per barrel. The composite refiner acquisition cost for crude oil increased $3.05 (6.2%), to $51.88 per barrel.
Petroleum products
Motor gasoline
- Monthly average prices for refiner sales of motor gasoline fell in all sales categories in January. The average retail price declined 11.8 cents to $1.855 per gallon, while the average wholesale price decreased 3.1 cents to $1.483 per gallon.
- Sales of finished motor gasoline by refiners declined in January. Total sales dropped 7.7 million gallons per day (2.4%) to an average of 310.4 million gallons per day. Retail sales fell 1.0 million gallons per day (4.1%), while wholesales decreased 6.7 million gallons per day (2.3%). DTW sales accounted for 7.1% of wholesales, while rack and bulk sales made up 85.9% and 7.1%, respectively.
No. 2 distillate
- January monthly average prices for refiner sales of No. 2 distillates mostly decreased from December levels. The average price for No. 2 diesel fuel sold to end users dropped 2.1 cents to $1.960 per gallon, while the average wholesale price fell 0.5 cent to $1.789 per gallon. The average retail price for No. 2 fuel oil decreased 2.7 cents to $2.195 per gallon, while the average wholesale price rose 1.7 cents to $1.813 per gallon.
- Overall, January sales of No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel by refiners dropped 1.5 million gallons per day (0.9%) to 161.7 million gallons per day. Retail sales rose 200,000 gallons per day (1.6%), while wholesales fell 1.7 million gallons per day (1.1%).
Residual fuel oil
- Monthly average prices for refiner sales of residual fuel oil show mixed trends in January. The wholesale price for low-sulfur residual fuel oil rose 8.0 cents to $1.332 per gallon. The price for high-sulfur residual fuel oil dropped 5.4 cents to $1.413 per gallon at retail, while the wholesale price rose 0.9 cent to $1.304 per gallon.
- January residual fuel oil sales by refiners remained flat at 10.8 million gallons per day. Retail sales increased 100,000 per day (2.9%), while wholesales fell 100,000 gallons per day (1.4%).
Other products
- Trends in refiner prices for the remaining surveyed products were mixed in January. Prices for propane and No. 1 distillate fell at both the retail and wholesale levels. Kerosene-type jet fuel prices declined at retail, but rose at wholesale. Prices for aviation gasoline dropped at the wholesale level while the price for kerosene increased in the same category.
- In January, refiner sales of propane and No. 1 distillate rose at retail and wholesale, while of kerosene-type jet fuel sales did the opposite. Sales of kerosene and aviation gasoline sales increased at the wholesale level.
