Crude oil

Monthly average crude oil prices increased in all sales categories at the start of 2019. The January average domestic crude oil first purchase price rose 13 cents (0.3%), to $47.85 per barrel.
The average free-on-board (f.o.b.) cost of imported crude oil climbed $11.41 (31.9%) to $47.23 per barrel, while the average landed cost of foreign crude oil rose $8.94 (23.1%), to $47.59 per barrel.
The average refiner acquisition cost for domestic crude oil increased 48 cents (0.9%), to $53.73 per barrel. The average cost of imported crude oil rose $6.39 (14.9%), to $49.19 per barrel. The composite refiner acquisition cost for crude oil increased $3.05 (6.2%), to $51.88 per barrel.

Monthly average prices for refiner sales of motor gasoline fell in all sales categories in January. The average retail price declined 11.8 cents to $1.855 per gallon, while the average wholesale price decreased 3.1 cents to $1.483 per gallon.
Sales of finished motor gasoline by refiners declined in January. Total sales dropped 7.7 million gallons per day (2.4%) to an average of 310.4 million gallons per day. Retail sales fell 1.0 million gallons per day (4.1%), while wholesales decreased 6.7 million gallons per day (2.3%). DTW sales accounted for 7.1% of wholesales, while rack and bulk sales made up 85.9% and 7.1%, respectively.

January monthly average prices for refiner sales of No. 2 distillates mostly decreased from December levels. The average price for No. 2 diesel fuel sold to end users dropped 2.1 cents to $1.960 per gallon, while the average wholesale price fell 0.5 cent to $1.789 per gallon. The average retail price for No. 2 fuel oil decreased 2.7 cents to $2.195 per gallon, while the average wholesale price rose 1.7 cents to $1.813 per gallon.
Overall, January sales of No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel by refiners dropped 1.5 million gallons per day (0.9%) to 161.7 million gallons per day. Retail sales rose 200,000 gallons per day (1.6%), while wholesales fell 1.7 million gallons per day (1.1%).

Monthly average prices for refiner sales of residual fuel oil show mixed trends in January. The wholesale price for low-sulfur residual fuel oil rose 8.0 cents to $1.332 per gallon. The price for high-sulfur residual fuel oil dropped 5.4 cents to $1.413 per gallon at retail, while the wholesale price rose 0.9 cent to $1.304 per gallon.
January residual fuel oil sales by refiners remained flat at 10.8 million gallons per day. Retail sales increased 100,000 per day (2.9%), while wholesales fell 100,000 gallons per day (1.4%).

Trends in refiner prices for the remaining surveyed products were mixed in January. Prices for propane and No. 1 distillate fell at both the retail and wholesale levels. Kerosene-type jet fuel prices declined at retail, but rose at wholesale. Prices for aviation gasoline dropped at the wholesale level while the price for kerosene increased in the same category.
In January, refiner sales of propane and No. 1 distillate rose at retail and wholesale, while of kerosene-type jet fuel sales did the opposite. Sales of kerosene and aviation gasoline sales increased at the wholesale level.
